What are Pupusas?

Pupusas are a uniquely traditional dish from El Salvador. They are handmade tortillas filled with various combinations of delicious ingredients including pork, refried beans, cheese, and loroco (a native flower of El Salvador). The dish has ancient history. Pupusas have been cooked for centuries by the native Nahuatl tribes of El Salvador.

The name Pupusa is the Spanish rendering of Popotlax, a combination of the Nahuatl words Popotl, which means large or stuffed, and Tlaxkalli which means tortilla. Pupusas are traditionally served with curtido, a slaw of pickled cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, oregano and chilies, and a salsa made from tomatoes, onions, and chilies. Through the centuries, Pupusas went from a tribal delicacy to becoming the signature dish of El Salvador recognized around the world.
